COMPOSER PERSPECTIVES
Sunday, October 17, 2010 at 4:00pm
Church of the Holy Trinity, 19th & Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia
What inspires a composer to write a piece of music? Randall Thompson’s, The Peaceable Kingdom is inspired by the Edward Hicks painting of the same name and its inventive use of a cappella choral textures has made it a true American classic. In the world premiere of his Metamorphoses, Philadelphia composer David Shapiro draws from the texts of the ancient Roman poet Ovid. Abbie Betinis pairs medieval Persian poetry with contemporary vocal techniques in her Bar xizam (Upward I Rise) and Gavin Bryars sets a text of Pope Leo XIII in praise of photography in the Philadelphia premiere of his On Photography scored for chorus, harmonium and piano.
